A New Beginning
Sometimes a blank page can feel daunting, causing artists of all types – writers to painters – to freeze with a creative block. On the glass-half-full side, a blank slate can feel liberating, a new beginning.
Fox and Kit is a brand-new, empty journal. I have taken the plastic wrap off and am eagerly and excitedly making notes and jotting down ideas to fill its pages. There is no manual of instructions, no looming deadlines, just a space full of wonderful possibilities. Not between covers and pages, but behind a vintage door and windows that have seen the journey of a charming little town. Nestled on a block shared by a movie theater from the 1930s, beautiful shops and businesses, including a historic toy-making shop. This energy stirs ideas and dreams that live alongside freshly painted display furniture. I am so excited to share.
I have been the owner of a few creative retail shops, happily wearing all the hats. I like some more than others. My favorite, the crown jewel, is the hat that lets me help others find their creativity. Many different types of arts and crafts have passed through my shop doors over the years, and no matter what the medium, it is always a joy when a customer feels that ‘a-ha’ moment when something clicks or they beam with pride over a finished project.
It is my utmost belief that everyone is creative in some way. Everyone. (Say you are not; demand that you have no creativity – not true, and that is a topic for another post or two.) We are all connected by this creativity. Imagine focusing on what connects us versus what divides us – and that connection is art, craft, color, cuisine, flowers, fabric – you get the point. This blank slate will be filled with this – and a community that comes together for joy behind the vintage door.
As I make notes, outlines, sketches, dreams, and plans for this new launch of Fox and Kit, a brick-and-mortar store and online world, I am lifted and driven by creativity – mine and yours – and look forward to filling the pages with art, craft, joy, and all that it brings.
